Tough little buggers, lasting ~5k miles so far.
Great pedals for a road bike and mostly-paved touring, really easy to clip into and out of, and they work well in traffic. I've owned them for 2 years now and ridden 4-6k miles, they haven't let me down yet. Some of the finish has worn off on mine but that is more because of me occasionally pedaling while not clipped in (you keep one foot clipped in and the other unclipped yet on top of the pedal while in slow traffic so you can stop quicker). These pedals are specifically for sport/training/exercise riding or long distance touring and they serve that purpose well. However, I would not recommend these for bikes that you ride short commutes or errands on, not because of any failure of the pedals, but because of the nature of the cleats. You shouldn't be walking in SPD-SLs for any considerable distance; it ruins the cleat, it's terribly uncomfortable to stand in, and it is a slipping hazard. For long commutes or planned long rides before or after work, they're perfectly fine to use because you are probably already bringing a change of clothes and shoes with you anyway, but for any rides less than 5 miles without a change of shoes, these cleats will make your bike totally inconvenient to use. Also things can get hairy in inclement weather, walking in snow can render your pedals useless.

For the price these can't be beat!
I am newer to clipless pedals so I purchased these since they are inexpensive and if I hated them I wouldn't feel to bad. I am very happy with these pedals, they look great, are of solid construction, are easy to get in and out of (important!) and are a great value. I won't lie, I took a couple of falls when I was first learning to use them, but now that I have the hang of clipping and unclipping I think they are great! They are not weighted so they do not lie flat, but when they do rotate the top always faces up and you can get used to just kicking it down when you go to clip in.

Good for entry level, not a fan of the slippery gloss
Definitely and entry level road pedal. No complaints about the quality or price but I would go with 105 carbon pedals over these any day. I run a pair of Ultegra 6800 carbon SPD-SL pedals now and feel slugish on the upstroke when using the R540s because of the weight. If you are new to clipless, go with SPD mountain bike pedals and shoes then transition to higher end road pedals (if you really want to) once you get used to running a clipless set up.The gloss paint and finish on these pedals is aesthetically appealing but from a performance standpoint, I don't like it. Unless the pedals and cleats/shoes are absolutely dry and clean, expect to slip greatly if you have issues clipping in. I am contemplating sanding off the paint on the platform area then finishing it with 50 grit sandpaper to avoid slippage.TL;Dr Good for entry level road pedals but beginner clipless users should go with MTB pedal/shoes first.

First time user and no problems
These pedals went on easy, not that it should be a problem. There was enough room for a wrench that I did not have to buy a special thin wrench. They are easy to clip in and out of. This is good because this is my first time using clipless pedals. It is good that they come with the cleats to, as they are pricy on their own. This is probably the best deal for clipless pedals. I was not counting the weight because I have an old heavy bike, but they are lighter than the conventional pedals they replaced.

good pedals!!!
I bought these pedals as entry level clip less pedals because I just started getting into road biking and wanted to have the advantage of these clip less pedals. I bought the shoes to fit from my local bike shop (specialized sport shoes) and with the cleats provided with the pedals they fit amazing. Its hard to get used to if you have never used them before but once you get the hang of it you'll never want to go back. These pedals are well made, work good, and the color goes great with my specialized allez. I would definitely recommend these to a friend. And also yes the cleats do come with the pedals that will bolt onto almost any clip less shoe.

Shimano SPD-SL R540 Clipless Pedals
This is my first experience with clipless pedals and I was a bit intimidated. My local bike shop got the pedals on my bike and the cleats on my shoes and I was off. I read tons of reviews here on Amazon and other places on these pedals and I wasnt disappointed. Even my riding trainer said they were nice and light and a good system. They work really well and I have already improved my cycling performance. Great price and great system. Thanks Amazon!

They work, but the cleats are too fragile
I was happy with these at first; they do everything as expected, but after a month of use the cleats were falling apart. At $20 dollars for a set of cleats, I was considering switching back to cages. Before I did I decided to give these:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000YB31II/a chance. I have now been using them for over a year without having to switch cleats ...and the cleats are less expensive! Overall, I really can't recommend this product, it's just too expensive in the long run. Check out the metal cleats.

Great pedals amd super sharp looking
Replaced a local store brand with these after getting new cleats that would not clip out, even after multiple adjustments. These were perfectly adjusted right out of box. I did not have to tweak at all - perfect tightness to keep me safely in while allowing a clip out that took just enough effort to feel safe but not trapped. I able to generate a lot of power with these and you can't go wrong with Shimano products. My bike is white with red/black trim and I have received several comments on how sharp the white version looks on my bike. Love these!!!

These are far more useful in that perspective than flat pedals
These work awesomely. I've got a 30 year old road bike that I wanted to upgrade for race training. These are far more useful in that perspective than flat pedals. I have rode with these pedals easily through 1000kms and still have no issues at all.

Am very happy with this product. Have to get used to it as I had pedal clips previously. Happy with Amazon also.
